Raccoons, especially mothers, choose to live in attics because they are warm and dry and offer protection from predators and the weather. Females seek out enclosed areas to raise their babies. Attics are also often close to food sources, such as trash cans and pet food. Once raccoons get into an attic, they choose areas for eating, giving birth, and taking care of their young.

Raccoons can climb onto roofs and squeeze through holes to get into attics. They can also chew through wood and tear off shingles to create their own entry points. Once inside, they can cause significant damage to the attic, anything stored in it, and the house itself by chewing, scratching, and leaving urine and feces. In most cases, a female raccoon enters an attic to give birth and take care of her babies.

SIGNS THAT RACCOONS ARE LIVING IN YOUR ATTIC

You may hear the raccoons moving around in the attic. Since raccoons are large animals, you will probably hear thumping sounds or the sounds of the raccoons walking. You are most likely to hear them at night since raccoons are nocturnal. You will probably hear them when they leave after dusk and return during the night. If there are babies, you may hear them crying and whining.

You may also see the raccoons if you go into your attic and look around. Raccoons that live in attics may be active during the day. You may also see the mother leave the house during the day to go off in search of food.

Raccoons may leave urine and droppings throughout the attic. If you go in the attic and see and smell waste, this is a clear sign that you have raccoons living there.

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE RACCOONS REMOVED FROM YOUR ATTIC RIGHT AWAY

Raccoons can carry illnesses that can be spread to humans through bites or waste. The most common form of illness is rabies, but raccoons can also have distemper, roundworms, and parasites.

If you have heard or seen evidence of raccoons living in your attic, you should have them removed as soon as possible. If you put it off, they will cause more damage to your house. You should not try to trap raccoons yourself because you could get bitten. Also, you might catch a mother, but there could still be babies living in the attic that would starve without her.
