If raccoons are living in your attic or somewhere in your yard, you will probably hear them. The sounds raccoons make are similar to noises made by other animals, so you might not be aware that you have a raccoon problem at first. These are some of the noises you might hear.
Sounds Raccoons Typically Make
Adult raccoons use a wide range of vocalizations, including purring, growling, hissing, whimpering, and screeching, to communicate with other raccoons. Many of these vocalizations are similar to sounds made by other species.
Baby raccoons cry, whine, and mew. They also make cooing sounds that can easily be mistaken for vocalizations made by birds. The sounds change as baby raccoons get older. Before the babies become mobile, the noises will be concentrated in one area.
If raccoons are living in your attic, you will likely hear some vocalizations as well as the sounds of them moving around. It may sound as though something is being dragged across the attic floor. Since raccoons are nocturnal, you will most likely hear the noises at night. You may also hear sounds associated with movement coming from the chimney, roof, or gutters.
How to Keep Raccoons away
The best way to keep raccoons from settling into your home or yard is to make those areas unattractive to them. Trim tree branches so they don’t hang over your roof and make it easy for raccoons to get into the attic. Routinely inspect your house for roof damage or holes that could be used as entry points and make any necessary repairs. Keep trash cans covered and lids weighed down. Don’t leave pet food outdoors overnight.
What to Do If Raccoons Have Already Moved in
If you see a raccoon in your yard or notice pawprints or piles of waste, one or more of the animals may have created a den on your property. If raccoons aren’t already in your attic, they could move in soon if you don’t take action. You shouldn’t try to catch or remove raccoons yourself. They could bite or scratch, potentially causing serious injuries to you. Raccoons might also carry rabies.
