With the spring season now in full swing and Memorial Day approaching here in Connecticut, many of us have one thing on the mind – getting outdoors. After a winter full of cold, dreary weather the time will soon be here when the grass is dry, the sun is shining and being outdoors for extended periods of time is possible.
It’s also the kick off to picnic season. Something that we New Englanders really enjoy about the warmer months. Nothing beats spending the day outdoors and finishing up with a meal al fresco grilled outdoors on a warm day.
Critters at a Picnic
One thing we don’t think about until it starts to happen to us though is the presence of wildlife in our picnic areas. After all, we have moved into their original living quarters. And while many have moved on to other areas to live, some will return and even possibly stick around – or worse, move in!
Birds and squirrels running about aren’t too much of a concern but when you see a raccoon or bat inching near the table you might be alarmed. Small pets, children and adults are not safe if the animals are carrying rabies or aggressive for any other reasons. Even if they’re harmlessly trying to sneak in some food, you should always be cautious to get near them. If they’re getting close and out at a time when they’re usually sleeping, there’s the reason for concern. Gather your things if possible and go indoors to safety.
